NZ Gets New Regulations for Conditional Release of GMOs

October 10, 2008

Effective November 7, 2008, new regulations for the conditional release of genetically modified organisms will be implemented in New Zealand. Conditional release means that the release of an organism outside strict containment is approved with controls. Compliance with these is monitored by the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry.

"The purpose of the changes is to provide a greater level of transparency, accountability and public openness in the management of GM crops should they be approved for use in New Zealand. The new regulation also provides greater certainty to applicants on the information that they would need to provide to the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) before a conditional release application would be considered,” said Minister of Environment Trevor Mallard.
