EU Authorizes Two GM Soybeans and Renews GM Maize for Food and Animal Feed Use

The European Commission has authorized two genetically modified (GM) soybean varieties and renewed the authorization of a GM maize for use in food and animal feed. The decisions follow scientific assessments by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which concluded that the GM crops are as safe as their conventional counterparts.

The GM crops underwent a comprehensive assessment covering potential effects on human and animal health and the environment. The Commission said it was legally required to decide on the authorizations after EU Member States failed to reach a qualified majority either supporting or opposing the measures.

The Commission's decision allows the GM soybeans and maize to be imported and used in food and animal feed but does not permit their cultivation in the EU. The authorizations will remain valid for 10 years. Products made from the authorized GM crops must also comply with EU labelling and traceability requirements.
