USDA APHIS Extends Deregulation of GE Corn DP51291

June 10, 2026

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced today that it has officially extended deregulation to a genetically engineered corn variety developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.

The corn variety, designated as DP51291, is modified to express insect resistance and tolerance to the herbicide glufosinate-ammonium. Because Pioneer had previously received approval for these identical genetic traits in an earlier corn variety (DP23211), the company was eligible to request an extension of that existing deregulation.

According to agency officials, APHIS conducted a Plant Pest Risk Similarity Assessment (PPRSA) to evaluate the new strain. The assessment concluded that DP51291 poses no greater risk as a plant pest than the previously approved version.

The final decision comes after a mandatory 30-day public review and comment period, during which the USDA reviewed feedback on its preliminary pest risk findings. Finding no evidence of environmental or agricultural risks, the extension took effect on May 19, 2026, allowing Pioneer to advance its commercial plans for the crop.
