EU Authorizes Market Entry of GM Soybean MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788
July 16, 2025 |
The European Commission has authorized the placing on the market of products containing, consisting of, or produced from genetically modified (GM) soybean MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788 for uses in food, feed, and other products, except for cultivation. The Decision was based on the Scientific Opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and years of review and submission of safety data by Bayer CropScience LP.
The decision follows an initial application by Monsanto Europe S.A./N.V. in 2015, which later became Bayer Agriculture BVBA. In October 2024, EFSA concluded that the GM soybean is as safe as its conventional counterparts concerning the potential effects on human and animal health and the environment. The GM soybean with improved fatty acid profile and tolerance to two herbicides underwent rigorous risk assessments addressing environmental impact, food and feed safety, and traceability requirements.
The Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/1321 was granted under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and the Council, notified under document C(2025) 4349. The approval includes strict labeling requirements and mandates a post-market monitoring plan to assess potential environmental impacts. All relevant details outlined in the Annex will be entered in the Community Register of GM Food and Feed. The Decision is valid for 10 years from the date of notification.
