Australia's Gene Technology Regulator Invites Comments on Commercial Release of GM Cotton

July 16, 2025

Australia's Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) is currently assessing an application from Bayer CropScience for the commercial cultivation of a cotton genetically modified (GM) for insect resistance and herbicide tolerance.

License DIR 216 indicates that the GM cotton will be grown in all cotton-growing areas of Australia. The GM cotton and its products would enter general commerce, including use in human food and animal feed.

The Regulator has prepared a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP) and welcomes written submissions relating to the protection of human health and safety, as well as the environment, before making a decision on whether to issue the licence. The finalized RARMP, together with a summary of the RARMP, a set of Questions and Answers on this decision, and a copy of the license, are available online from the DIR 216 page on the OGTR website.
