Euroseeds Calls on Danish Presidency to Drive NGT Discussions to Conclusion
July 9, 2025 |
The presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates among the EU member states every six months. Three presidencies work together called "trios." The current trio is made up of the presidencies of Poland, Denmark, and Cyprus. On July 1, 2025, the Danish presidency of the EU began.
Based on its strong expertise and position as a leading country in plant breeding and seed production, Euroseeds is convinced that the Danish presidency will make the successful conclusion of the negotiations on a new Regulation on New Genomic Techniques one of its top priorities.
In their statement, Euroseeds emphasized that plant breeding innovation is a crucial enabler for the aspired boost of competitiveness of Europe's farmers and wider agri-food chain sectors as well as for driving the transition towards a sustainable food system. NGTs such as gene editing are indispensable tools for Europe's breeders to continue to bring improved plant varieties to the market that meet the high-quality requirements of their customers and for the EU to defend its position as a world leader in plant breeding research, product development, and global seed exports.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU for its commitment and hard work on this file over the past months. Few have imagined that we would get as far as we are today”, Garlich von Essen, Secretary General & CEO of Euroseeds commented on the eve of the Polish presidency.
