FSA Review Explores Consumer Responses to Cell-Cultivated Products

March 19, 2025

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) released an evidence review examining consumer responses to cell-cultivated products in the UK, including meat, seafood, dairy, and plants. The findings are published in FSA Research and Evidence.

Previous studies have explored consumer responses to cell-cultivated meat and seafood, with limited research on plant-based and dairy alternatives. This review updates three existing studies on consumer perceptions of cell-cultivated products. However, limited data was observed on consumer views across religious groups and dietary preferences.

The review showed that a minority (16-41%) of people in the UK are willing to consume cell-cultivated meat. While 59% of people recognize the potential benefits of cell-cultivated meat, more people (85%) express concerns regarding its safety, unnaturalness, and impact on farmers. The review also showed that FSA approval is essential and people expect cell-cultivated meat to be regulated and clearly labeled.
