EU Approves GM Corn for Food and Feed
July 17, 2024 |
Two genetically modified (GM) maize crops were granted with import approval from the European Commission. The Commission also renewed the authorization for another GM maize for food and feed use in the EU.
According to the Commission, the GM maize varieties that were granted with approvals went through a rigorous evaluation process to ensure human and animal health and the environment are protected from any unintended harm. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released the results of their scientific assessment of the GM maize varieties with the conclusion that they are as safe as their conventional counterparts.
The authorizations granted by the Commission are valid for 10 years. GM products are subject to the EU's labeling and traceability guidelines.
