EFSA Releases Assessments of GM Maize GA21 x T25 for Renewal and MON 87419 for Food and Feed Uses

February 1, 2023

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) GMO Panel has released its Scientific Opinion on the safety of genetically modified (GM) herbicide tolerant maize GA21 × T25 and MON 87419, for import, processing, and food and feed uses within the European Union (EU) and does not include cultivation.

Following the submission of application EFSA-GMO-DE-2016-137 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 from Syngenta Crop Protection, the EFSA GMO Panel was asked to deliver a Scientific Opinion on the safety of GM maize GA21 × T25. In their Scientific Opinion, the GMO Panel states that it has previously assessed the two single maize events and did not identify safety concerns and its previous conclusions remain valid. No new data on the single maize events were identified that could lead to modification of the original conclusions on their safety. The GMO Panel concludes that maize GA21 × T25 is as safe as its conventional counterpart and the non-GM reference varieties tested, with respect to potential effects on human and animal health and the environment.

For Application EFSA-GMO-NL-2017-140 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 from Monsanto Europe S.A., the GMO Panel did not identify safety concerns regarding the toxicity and allergenicity of the dicamba mono-oxygenase and phosphinothricin N-acetyltransferase proteins expressed in maize MON 87419. The Scientific Opinion states that the GMO Panel concludes that maize MON 87419 is as safe as the conventional counterpart and non-GM maize varieties tested, with respect to potential effects on human and animal health and the environment.
