African Science Initiative Formed

January 4, 2008

The Pan Africa Chemistry Network has been created to help promote the economic and social development of the continent. Initially established in Kenya, this African science initiative was set-up by Syngenta and the Royal Society of Chemistry to “connect African chemists more effectively and to enable them to achieve greater levels of innovation and scientific development”. The network will focus on agricultural development including food security and sustainability, clean water and disease prevention.

African scientists will be expected to work together to address key issues through new initiatives spanning education and research, workshops, exchange programs, and increased knowledge sharing. Among the activities include a program of seminars, conferences and workshops as well as fellowships and grants to enhance networking, technology transfer, and skills development by facilitating international mobility of key scientists.
