EMBRAPA Set to Launch New Crop Varieties

January 4, 2008

The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) is set to release new crop varieties to welcome the New Year. The winter wheat cultivar, Demeter, is set to be released early this month. The disease-resistant cultivar was found to produce class 1 grains at up to 8,900 kg/ha in experimental areas. It is also attractive to the brewing industry because of the protein and beta-glucan content of its grains and the viscosity of its extract. EMBRAPA will release low land rice and sesame varieties early this year. The drought-tolerant sesame variety is resistant to fungal diseases like charcoal rot and leaf spot. Under experimental conditions, it produced 20 percent more yield compared to commercial sesame cultivars. EMBRAPA aims to increase the competitiveness of local farmers, especially with the release of these new crop varieties.
