Germany Clears Bt Maize
December 7, 2007 |
The German Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has approved Monsanto’s Bt maize MON810. Bt maize seeds may be sold again in Germany for commercial cultivation. Earlier this year, BVL suspended the authorization for the market placement of MON810 and asked Monsanto for a plan to monitor the environmental effects of cultivating the GM crop. The Office has now approved Monsanto’s implementation plan, wherein monitoring of the effects of Bt maize on biodiversity will be conducted by a network of public institutions, associations and scientists. With the approval, Monsanto expects the area of Bt maize cultivation to expand significantly in the coming seasons.
