German Agric Minister Proposes Changes in GMO Authorisation Procedure
December 7, 2007 |
German Agriculture Minister, Horst Seehofer, has proposed a change to the authorization procedure for transgenic plants in the European Union. He recommended that in the future, authorization decisions should be based entirely on results of scientific investigations. He also suggested that there should be no place for political votes, such as those held in the European Commission. He proposed further that there should be an authorization moratorium, until a new procedure is agreed and established.
Currently, scientific assessments on the safety of GM plants are being carried out by the European Food Standards Authority (EFSA). EFSA’s opinion is then submitted to the European Commission, which will produce a draft decision regarding the application. Seehofer’s proposal was made amidst controversies within the Commission regarding the authorization of two transgenic maize varieties. EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas on the otherhand announced that he would not be granting the authorization, even if EFSA’s assessment showed that the transgenic maize lines are safe.
