Aeroponics: Growing Potatoes in Mid-Air

The International Potato Center (CIP) has been using a new technique called aeroponics in growing seed potatoes. Aeroponics consists of cultivating potato seedlings on specially adapted frames so that the roots, and the tubers, grow suspended in the air, without touching the soil. Through this technique, a higher yield of seed tubers per plant of native potato varieties were obtained compared with those harvested using conventional techniques.
