IndoBIC Concludes Seminar on Stewardship of Late Blight Resistant Potato in Bogor

The Indonesian Biotechnology Information Center (IndoBIC) held a seminar on Stewardship of Late Blight Resistant Potato for farmers, agricultural officers, and scientists on December 18, 2014 at SEAMEO BIOTROP headquarters. Some 32 participants and speakers comprised of agricultural officials, farmers, and representatives from research institutions attended this event through the support of the Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project (ABSP II) in collaboration with IndoBIC and ICABIOGRAD, ISAAA, and SEAMEO BIOTROP.
This seminar was graced by Prof. Dr. Bambang Purwantara, Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP; Prof. Max J. Pfeffer, Senior Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell University, USA; Prof. Desiree Hautea Regional Coordinator SEAsia ABSPII, UPLB-Philippines; and Prof. Dr. M. Herman, Indonesia ABSP Coordinator. In his opening message, Prof. Bambang Purwantara emphasized that this upcoming biotech potato will benefit the farmers by reducing the fungicide cost up to 50-80%.
The event aimed to inform participants about the advantages of Late Blight Resistant (LBR) potato; highlight the process of variety registration of LBR potato; as well as discuss the standard operational procedures (SOP) of seeds multiplication, cultivation and management of biotech potato.
Furthermore, participants learned about the current status of studies on biotech potato resistant to late blight disease; and on environment and food safety of biotech potato, respectively from Dr. Dinar Ambarwati and Prof. Dr. M. Herman from Indonesia Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources (ICABIOGRAD). The registration process and the SOP of seeds multiplication, cultivation and management of biotech potato was delivered by Ir. Kusmana and Mrs. Tri Handayani from Indonesian Vegetable Research Institute (IVRI), respectively.
