Improving Conifers through Genomics

November 12, 2014

ProCoGen is a project involving collaborative genomic studies of conifer by European scientists. The project specifically aims to identify the genes and gene networks present in conifers. This will lead to better understanding of the plant and the development of more adapted conifers in varying environmental conditions brought about by climate change. Conifer has a complex genome and is seven times larger than human genome. Main conifers that will be used in the study are Pinus sylvetris and Pinus pinaster and will also include US conifer species, Pinus taeda.

Through the project, the use of different genomic tools will hopefully be able to enhance tree productivity and traits that will be necessary in improving conifers adaptability to different environmental conditions. It also hopes to further provide information regarding their ecological processes and mechanisms.
