Chinese Scientists Complete Genome Sequence of Jujube Tree
November 12, 2014 |
BGI Tech and Hebei Agricultural University jointly announced the complete, high quality sequence of the Jujube genome. Jujube is the most economically important member of the Rhamnaceae family, and it is the first time that a genome in the Rhamnaceae (Buckthorn) family has been sequenced.
The third most widely grown fruit in China, Jujube has higher vitamin C content than other well-known vitamin C-rich fruits such as orange and kiwi fruit. It is highly resistant to salinity and drought, and grows well in sandy, alkaline and arid areas. Scientists say that the genome sequence will help create improved varieties of other crops, such as grain varieties.
