September 10, 2014 |
ISAAAAfriCenter, in partnership with African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ABNE)-New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), organized a one-day meeting to familiarize biotechnology and biosafety stakeholders in eastern Africa with the issues to be discussed in the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP)/ Meeting of Parties (MOP)7 meeting. The meeting, which was attended by representatives from 10 countries was held on August 20, 2014, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the Intercontinental Hotel. The workshop involved national biosafety focal points, scientists, and experts on biotechnology and biosafety issues.
In his opening remarks, Sam Timpo from ABNE-NEPAD recognized the need for African countries to speak in one voice on MOP issues to avoid being left out in the advent of the technology. Participants deliberated and agreed on various contentious issues which will be presented to the wider African regional preparatory meeting scheduled on September 28, 2014 in Korea prior to the actual COP MOP 7 meeting. The deliberations from this meeting will also empower country representatives to make informed decisions while developing national positions for various issues of discussion at COP MOP7.
The 7th COP/MOP of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is scheduled in September 29-October 3, 2014 in the Republic of Korea.
