Pakistan to Reformulate Biosafety Guidelines

A Consultative Workshop on the reformulation of Biosafety Guidelines was organized by Pakistan Biotechnology Information Center (PABIC) Lahore chapter at the Center for Public Policy and Governance in Forman Christian (FC) College University on June 25, 2014. The event was attended by prominent members of academia, industry, and policy making including Mr. Anwar Rashid, Secretary of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), Punjab and Dr. Muhammad Anjum Ali, Director of General Extension.
Dr. Kauser Abdulla Malik, Professor and Coordinator, Dean of Graduate Studies at FC College, in his opening remarks, highlighted the need for reviewing the guidelines in view of recent legislative changes (18th Amendment). Suggestions from experts from academia and industry were taken on the issue, and brought to the consideration of policy makers present in the meeting. Dr. Shahid Mansoor, Director NIBGE, presented on the regulatory status in Pakistan and possible inroads for improvement. All stakeholders present were appreciative that the workshop was a step in the right direction.
