IFR Express Support for CST's Call for a More Balanced GM Regulation
March 26, 2014 |
The Institute of Food Research in UK expressed its support to the Council for Scientific Technology's advice submitted to the Prime Minister regarding the regulation of GM crops. IFT released a statement through their website saying that scientific evidence has consistently shown no intrinsic risks in the genetic modification process itself, thus the regulations should reflect that and focus on testing the product itself, rather than the technology. It was also stressed that GM has the potential to deliver nutritionally enhanced foods, but currently their public good benefits cannot be fully realized. Since challenges facing society in feeding a global population continue to grow, then there is a greater need for technologies, including GM, that aids in enhancing nutrition and food security in a more sustainable manner.
