60th Anniversary of DNA Structure Discovery Focuses on GM Technology

A symposium commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the DNA double helix discovery and the 20th Anniversary of the Chinese Society of Biotechnology was held on 17 October 2013 at China Science and Technology Hall in Beijing. Leaders from the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Agriculture, China Development Bank, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and scientists of related institutes attended the event.

Academician Ouyang Pingkai, President of Chinese Society of Biotechnology (CSBT), reviewed the 60 years development of molecular biology and missions of CSBT, namely, academic communication, science popularization, and industry promotion. On the other hand, Academician Yang Shengli, Honorary President of CSBT, made a presentation titled "From DNA Double Helix to Bio-industry".

Dr. Chen Zhangliang, Vice President of China Association for Science and Technology, praised the innovation of CSBT in science popularization. He emphasized that "modern biotechnology has been closely related to our life. Strong public awareness of science especially in GM technology should be the target of CSBT's work."
