The World of "GM-free"
October 9, 2013 |
Vivian Moses of King's College and Graham Brookes of PG Economics published an article discussing the objectives, purposes, and implications of GM-free agriculture. The article was published in the special issue of GM Crops and Food.
According to the article, if true "GM-free" status is to be achieved, extensive effort must be made to remove in "GM-free" product all traces of material from GM sources. It has been observed that delivery of 100 percent pure agricultural product is not possible with the current use of GM technology worldwide. The key to minimizing the unwanted presence of GM-material is the implementation of identity preservation or segregation systems to keep material from the two sources of supply completely separate. However, such systems would increase the costs of the end product because of the requirement of operating entirely separate supply chains, to keep detailed records and regularly to check and test to ensure that unwanted material is not present in a material that will be labeled as non-GM.
