Thai Researchers Aim for Non-food GMOs

A group of Thai researchers at the Center for Agricultural Biotechnology (CAB) of Kasetsart University, led by Dr. Sermsiri Chanprame, is conducting R&D on non-food GMOs. The reserch team at CAB are currently focused on the development of transgenic orchid for prolonged vase life and eucalyptus for less lignin content. The researchers also developed a line of Stylosanthes hamata, a tropical forage legume with VP1 coat protein gene to produce the edible vaccine for foot and mouth disease virus for cloven-footed animals. Another research is on the economically important forest tree Teak (Tetona grandie), for insect resistance.
This area of non-food GMOs research could offer an opportunity for Thailand to reap the benefits of plant biotechnology.
