EFSA: GM Cotton T304-40 is as Safe and Nutritious as its Conventional Counterpart

July 3, 2013

The Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA GMO Panel) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety of the insect resistant and herbicide tolerant genetically modified (GM) cotton T304-40 for import and processing for food and feed uses. Based on the information presented to EFSA GMO Panel, there is no evidence that genetic modification might significantly change the overall allergenicity of cotton T304-40. Nutritional equivalence of cotton T304-40 to its conventional counterparts was also verified.

The EFSA GMO Panel thus concludes that cotton T304-40 is as safe and nutritious as its conventional counterpart and that it is unlikely that the overall allergenicity of the whole plant is changed.
