G8 and Private Sector to Invest in Mozambican Agriculture

The New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, a Group of 8 (G8) initiative, is planning to invest US$380M in Mozambican agriculture to lift three million people out of poverty by 2015, said US Ambassador to Mozambique, Douglas Griffiths, during the formal launch of the alliance in Mozambique. He also said that the private sector will also give US$500M in addition to the contribution of development partners.

The Mozambican government, together with cooperation partners and the private sector already had a meeting to plan the roadmap of activities for the next 10 to 18 months. He also added that there are groups who are planning to work with small farmers to improve production and marketing. The main partners in the alliance in Mozambique will include United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
