Effect of Bt Corn on Arthropod Communities in Commercial Farms and Adjacent Riparian Areas
October 10, 2012 |
A study was conducted by entomologist Dr. Edwin Alcantara of the University of the Philippines Los Baños from 2006 to 2009 to investigate if Bt corn has long term effects on arthropod communities in commercial farms and in adjacent riparian areas. The arthropod composition was monitored through visual inspection in commercial farms and through sweep sampling in nearby riparian areas. Results of the sampling revealed that the arthropods composition and diversity were similar in Bt and non-Bt corn farms and in riparian areas. These findings reveal that Bt corn does not affect arthropod communities in farms and nearby riparian areas.
