FAO: World Rice Production to Increase

August 10, 2012

The global production of rice is most likely to surpass the excellent results achieved in 2011. This is according to the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) report, Rice Market Monitor. The July 2012 issue of the publication, however, revised its forecast on the total world rice production to a lower output this year.

According to the report, the main reason for downward revision are the below normal monsoon rains in India, which reduced FAO's rice output forecast to about 7.8 million tons. Production forecasts were also reduced for Cambodia, Taiwan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea and Nepal, all of which may see a production drop in 2012.

In terms of production gains, Mainland China, Indonesia and Thailand, along with several other Asian countries, are expected to register higher output. Africa will produce 3 percent higher than the previous year while Australia's yield has recorded a 32 percent increase.
