India to Establish Borlaug Institute for South Asia

India's Union Cabinet approved the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Research and Education for the establishment of the Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA) in India. The institute will have centers at Ludhiana in Punjab, Pusa in Bihar and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The idea for the institute was proposed by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT).

BISA will be conferred an international status as contemplated in clause 3 of United Nations (Privileges and Immunities) Act, 1947. The Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) on behalf of Government of India will be authorized in all matters regarding establishment of the institute.

The establishment of BISA will enable India to harness the best of international science and in meeting food security challenges. It will make India a bigger center for agricultural research in the world and thus, attract further research and development investment in the country.
