Mexico Oks Pilot Field of GM Corn

March 11, 2011

Mexico's Agriculture Ministry approved the first pilot program of Monsanto to plant genetically modified (GM) corn in more than 2.47 acres (1 hectare) in the northern state of Tamaulipas. According to large commercial farmers, GM corn will help them compete with imports coming from the U.S., which are mostly genetically engineered.

"It is necessary to advance the use of biotechnology to reduce imports and promote national production," the ministry statement said.
