Scientists Develop Zinc-Rich Rice Varieties in Bangladesh

March 11, 2011

Scientists at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute are currently finding ways to mass produce high zinc rice in Bangladesh to reduce micronutrient shortages. They are testing seeds selected from hundreds of thousands of rice strains with high zinc content. Traditional breeding methods and genetic engineering are being used  to produce biofortified rice rich in zinc.

According to Rezaul Karim, manager of Bangladesh Rice Foundation, it may be difficult to convince farmers to plant new breeds. "Farmers are risk averse. However we are planning an educational campaign about the benefits of bio-fortified rice. If consumers are motivated, farmers will be motivated."
