Experts Review Gene Editing Applications in Rice
May 29, 2024 |
Researchers from Chandigarh University in India and partners reviewed how gene editing was used for targeted modifications in rice. Their study demonstrated the potential of gene editing to contribute to sustainable agriculture and food security.
Rice is a staple food in many countries around the world. However, its production is threatened by different pathogens and pests, which makes it a necessity to produce resilient crop varieties. Gene editing technologies provide precise and efficient tools to develop new varieties of rice.
The scientists analyzed the recent advancements in gene editing technologies that can be used on rice. The research demonstrates that the application of gene editing in rice may help the crop confront evolving threats, such as diseases and environmental damage. The team examined possible constraints and future opportunities for deploying altered varieties in agricultural landscapes. The study also discussed the ethical concerns and regulatory frameworks on the development of genetically modified crops.
