Biotech Workshop on Modern Agriculture for Brighter Future in Medan

A workshop with the theme "Modern Agriculture for Brighter Future" was conducted in Medan, North Sumatera on 19 June 2012. It aimed to build biotechnology knowledge for government officers and other stakeholders to improve their ability to communicate the technology to the general public and accelerate biotech acceptance in Indonesia.

The head of agricultural bureau of North Sumatera, Ir. M. Roem S. expressed his enthusiasm on accepting biotech crops adding that this kind of technology is very useful in agriculture and food productivity. Other prominent speakers included Dr. M. Herman of ICABIOGRAD, Ir. Winarno Tohir of KTNA, Prof. Edison Purba of University of Sumatera Utara, and Ir. Dahri Tanjung, Msi of Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution and Empowerment, Bogor Agricultural University (CARE IPB).

Ir. Dahri Tanjung discussed the economic and social impact of genetically engineered products such as biotech corn that include among others: a) increased national production value, b) improved product quality, and c) cost savings for consumers either through reduced prices and increased consumer surplus.

The event was concluded by a visit to the confined field trial of biotech corn at Tanjung Selamat, North Sumatera.
