January 20, 2012

Iran's first transgenic goats Shangool and Mangool which produce recombinant proteins for treatment of Hemophilia were born on January 9, 2010 at Royan Research Institute, Iran. Rahman Fakheri one of the researchers in the institute confirmed in a news release the expression of human coagulation gene (factor 9) in the transgenic goat milk.

Hamid Gourabi, the Director General of Royan Research Institute said: "Following 3 years of research on transgenic animals, the institute has succeeded in producing two transgenic goats expressing coagulation factor IX in their milk, which is an important medicine currently being administered for treatment of hemophilia patients." He added that producing drugs in transgenic livestock milk is an economical and cost saving method since the expenses are much less than producing the same drugs in laboratory by traditional methods or using tissue culture.
