Attitudes of European Farmers Towards GM Crop Adoption

December 21, 2011

Francisco Areal of the European Commission Joint Research Centre and team conducted a survey to analyze the attitudes of European Union (EU) farmers towards the adoption of GM crops. They classified the farmers into two clusters – potential adopters or rejecters of GM herbicide tolerant (GMHT) crops. Results showed that  economic issues like assurance of better income and reduction in farming costs are the most encouraging reasons for potential adopters and rejecters of GMHT crops.

The researchers also found that the implementation of coexistence policy would have a negative effect on the attitudes of farmers towards adoption and may possibly hinder adoption of GMHT crops in the EU.
