Spotlight on Biofortified Crops during the FANUS Conference

The importance of biofortification was acknowledged during the conference of the Federation of African Nutrition Societies in Abuja, Nigeria, which was held on September 12 to 15, 2011. The theme of the conference was Accelerating Nutrition Actions for Africa's Development, and was attended by more than 500 participants from 12 countries.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Onyebuchi Christian Chukwi, Nigerian Minister of Health, stressed that biofortification is a cost-effective strategy for addressing micronutrient deficiency in developing countries. HarvestPlus, a nongovernmental organization that develops biofortified crops, had an exhibition of vitamin A-rich versions of West African food products gari and fufu made from cassava. According to HarvestPlus, three vitamin A-rich varieties of cassava will be release in Nigeria in the coming months.
