CGRFA and CBD Strengthen Collaboration to Preserve Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture

July 22, 2011

The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) of the Food  and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will fortify their partnership to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets by collaborative actions that will preserve biodiversity for food and agriculture.

Governments have recognized the importance of biodiversity for food and agriculture and adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 in Nagoya, Japan, in October 2010. Thus, it is the best time to enhance the collaboration the CGRFA and CBD to conserve genetic resources for food security, poverty alleviation, and adaptation to combat climate change. This second phase of the partnership will focus on key areas such as "assessment of biodiversity in line with food and agriculture, targets and indicators; best practices for the management of agricultural biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem services; and climate change and genetic resources for food and agriculture."
