Neiker-Tecnalia Aims to Use New Genetic Tools to Improve the Potato

April 1, 2011

The Basque Institute of Agricultural Research and Development or Neiker-Tecnalia has initiated a potato project that would utilize various molecular and genetic tools to improve potato tubers which have better physico chemical conditions for industrial use, as well as for producing healthier and more fundtional foodstuffs.

Directed mutagenesis, the basis of Tilling technique will be used to modify the potato starch by playing with the amylose and amylopectin components, the length of the polymers, and the degree of phosphorylation. Alleles of the starch-branching enzyme (SEB) with reduced or zero activity will be produced and identified. An analysis of SEB genes and other genes that influence quality and quantity will also be determined.
