2nd Generation Biotech Corn Approved in the Philippines

The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) of the Philippines has granted permission to Monsanto to sell its 2nd generation biotech corn (MON 89034 x NK603) with resistance to insect and herbicide. The permit for the event, which is a combination Yield Gard and Roundup Ready Corn traits, is effective until 2016.

BPI Director Clarito Barron said that he was pleased that the regulatory system was able to assess another biotech crop which has passed the biosafety standards. He also stressed that the BPI will constantly exert effort "to ensure that biotech crops allowed for cultivation in the country have undergone and passed sufficient evaluation by technical experts for the benefit of farmers and the general public."
