
Glucose Transport in Rice Studied

In Arabidopsis, sugar compartmentalization into vacuoles is facilitated by monosaccharide transporters or OsTMTs. However, the role of these sugar transporters has not been analyzed in other crops. Jung-Il Cho of Kyung Hee University, Korea and colleagues from the Univerity of Zurich, and two other Korean universities, conducted a study to characterize the expression and function of OsTMT1 and OsTMT2 in rice (Oryza sativa).
Green fluorescent protein (GFP) was used to distinguish the subcellular positioning of OsTMT1 and OsTMT2. Results showed that these sugar transporters are located at the membrane of vacuoles or tonoplast. On the other hand, through reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), it was found out that OsTMT1 and OsTMT2 are both dominant in the bundle sheath cells, and in vascular parenchyma cells and companion cells in leaves, respectively. The glucose transport ability of OsTMTs was also studied using isolated vacuoles from transgenic mutant Arabidopsis. Results showed that OsTMTs are capable of glucose transport.
