
JNU Organizes Seminar on Biotech in Agriculture

A lecture on "The past, present and future of biotechnology" was organized by the School of Life Sciences (SLS) of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. Resource speakers were biotech experts Dr. Clive James, Founder and Chairman, International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA); Prof. S. K. Sopory, group leader, Plant Molecular Biology, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB); Prof. N. B. Sarin, Acting Dean, SLS, JNU; Prof. K. C. Upadhyaya, Prof. B. C. Tripathy and Prof. Ashwani Pareek of SLS, JNU. More than 300 participants attended the lecture including researchers and academia personnel, students from JNU, ICGEB, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute for Plant Genome Research (NIPGER), Delhi University, North Campus and many other institutions. The highlight of the program was the presentation of Dr. Clive James who emphasized the significant achievements in agriculture since the inception of biotechnology about 13 years ago. He spoke about the contribution of biotechnology in alleviating poverty by counter-acting the monstrous problem of hunger plaguing the world. He stressed the fact that biotechnology is not the panacea to solve all world problems, rather it is the contribution to the solution of these problems. Thereafter, Prof. K. C. Upadhayaya briefed the audience about the status of biotechnology research at JNU and emphasized on collaborative research efforts. To culminate the program, Prof. Tripathy gave a vote of thanks.
