Burkina Faso Suspends Field Trials of GM Mosquito

September 17, 2025

Burkina Faso has halted Target Malaria's field trials after researchers released 16,000 genetically modified (GM) male mosquitoes in the village of Souroukoudingan on August 11, 2025. The release, aimed at reducing malaria-transmitting mosquitoes, marked the first experiment of its kind in Africa.

In July 2025, the Target Malaria Burkina Faso team received authorization from the National Biosafety Agency (ANB), the National Environment Assessment Agency (ANEVE), and the Ethics Committee for Health Research (CERS) to conduct controlled release of GM mosquitoes. However, the national authorities requested the Target Malaria team based at the Institute of Health Sciences Research (IRSS) to suspend all their activities on August 18, 2025.

On August 22, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation announced that the Target Malaria project had terminated all activities in Burkina Faso. The team from Target Malaria has been cooperating with the authorities to implement the necessary measures and comply with this ruling.
