Nigeria Plans to Introduce GMO Labeling to Build Public Trust and Transparency

September 10, 2025

In a press release from the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare, Nigeria is planning to introduce labelling and traceability protocols during a workshop hosted by the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) and the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB). This movement is part of the Federal Government's commitment to deploying safe, science-driven biotechnology in the country.

Mr. John Atanda, National Coordinator of the Food Safety and Quality Programme in the Food and Drug Services Department, stated that every genetically modified (GM) product will undergo rigorous risk assessments, including assessments of allergenicity, nutritional composition, long-term health impacts, and environmental safety. “With robust regulations in place, including labelling and traceability protocols, we aim to reinforce public trust and transparency,” Mr. Atanda said.

Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, Director-General of NBRDA, highlighted the increase in the yields of Nigerian biotech farmers, citing the 50% increase in TELA maize pilot projects, reduced pesticide use in Bt cowpea cultivation, and improved cotton yields. Prof. Mustapha urged policymakers and journalists to focus on data-driven communication to combat misinformation in biotechnology.
