FSA and FSS Confirm Safety of GM Soybean MON 87705 x MON 87708 x MON 89788

April 2, 2025

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) released the results of the safety assessment on the genetically modified (GM) soybean MON 87705 x MON 87708 x MON 89788 (three-event stack soybean) for food and feed uses. The safety assessment is published in FSA Research and Evidence.

The three-event stack soybean was developed to enhance the seed's fatty acid profile by increasing oleic acid levels and introducing two proteins that provide tolerance to dicamba (DMO) and glyphosate-based herbicides (CP4 EPSPS). The application, submitted by Bayer CropScience Ltd, seeks authorization for import, processing, and use in food and feed but does not include cultivation in the UK.

The FSA and FSS concluded that the three-event stack soybean MON 87705 x MON 87708 x MON 89788 poses no additional risks to human and animal health or the environment. The assessment concurred with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Scientific Opinion, confirming that the GM soybean is as safe as its non-GM counterpart. The safety assessment was conducted under assimilated Regulation (EC) No. 1829/2003.
