Researchers Identify Gene Regulating Flowering Time and Leaf Angle in Rapeseed
October 16, 2024 |
A study in Plant Direct reveals the gene responsible for regulating the flowering time and leaf angle of rapeseed. The findings of the study aim to provide a theoretical foundation for breeding new germplasm with desired plant traits, contributing to the advances of rapeseed crop improvement.
Cultivated for its high-quality oil, rapeseed is valued for its nutritional profile, including low saturated fat content and a favorable omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio. The regulation of plant architecture and phenology is vital for enhancing productivity and yield. Factors such as leaf and branch angles influence optimal planting density, affecting photosynthetic efficiency and overall yield.
The CRISPR-Cas9 knockout lines showed larger leaf angles and earlier budding, flowering time, and floral organ abscission, while the overexpressed lines exhibited the opposite. There was also an increased expression of gibberellin and ethylene biosynthesis genes and floral integrator genes in knockout lines. The study concluded that BnaBP influences flowering time, floral organ abscission, leaf angle, and germination processes in rapeseed.
