Argentina Sets Science Ministry

Argentina will establish a new Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation, announced the newly elected President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner last week. The ministry, which will be formally inaugurated when de Kirchner assumes post in December, will be headed by molecular biologist Lino Barañao. Barañao is a researcher at Argentina's National Council of Science and Technology (CONICET) and the president of the National Agency for the Promotion of Science and Technology. The establishment of the ministry marks a major shift for science in the country, as it is likely to increase investments in science and technology. Currently, science is under the combined Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
