Philippines Celebrates Biotech Week

The Philippines celebrated the third National Biotechnology Week on November 26 to 29. The week-long activities highlighted the government’s programs for the safe and responsible use of modern biotechnology. The activity was spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture (DA), with agriculture undersecretary for field operations Jesus Emmanuel M. Paras and Director Alicia Ilaga, head of the Department of Agriculture-Biotechnology Program Office, leading the opening ceremonies.

With the theme “Pinoy Biotech: For Health, Livelihood and For the Future”, the celebration focused on the benefits of agricultural biotechnology products in improving the livelihood of farmers. The program included activities that interest various stakeholders such as technology exhibit and trade fair, stakeholders’ forum and symposium. The Department of Agriculture (DA) inaugurated a biotechnology business incubation facility and launched the Biotechnology Research Fellowship Program. Seminars on communicating biotech, forum on biotech forestry, and agribiotech initiatives and inovations for industry were also held. Awards for outstanding news writers on biotech and winners of regional biotech quiz contests were also given.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared the last week of November as the National Biotechnology Week. She pointed out, in her proclamation, the increasing importance of biotechnology for development of medical, industrial, environmental and agricultural applications.
