Biotech Expert Calls for Stronger Links for Regulation of GM Products
June 17, 2015 |
African countries must reinforce linkages between national biosafety regulatory authorities to improve the continent's ability to manage GM products, said Dr. Getachew Belay, senior biotechnology advisor or the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). He mentioned this during the regional biosafety training workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe, attended by 76 stakeholders from African countries organized by COMESA through its Regional Biotechnology and Biosafety Programme, and supported the National Biotechnology Authority of Zimbabwe (NBA).
"Biosafety issues are regional in nature and environmental impacts don't respect borders…Food safety issues are similar across borders with common consumption patterns and we need regional mechanisms for sharing regional expertise and infrastructure," said Dr. Belay. He also added that sharing of information and proper coordination on transboundary movement of GM products would help to develop a robust continental biosafety system.
