OFAB Recommends Forum to Champion Biotech in Africa
May 21, 2014 |
The Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB) recommended putting up of a forum for experts that could help in the development of agricultural biotechnology in the region, particularly in establishing biosafety laws in African countries. This was just one of the recommendations formulated during the 4th Annual OFAB Annual Planning and Review Meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria on April 22-26, 2014.
Members of the Forum observed that establishing such body of experts would help African countries in resisting unfavorable situations in the pursuit of advancing agricultural biotechnology. They also mentioned that there is a need for the body of experts to work with the national and regional academies like African Academy of Science as well as with grassroots network to disseminate biotech information to farmers. Other recommendations include use of local languages for effective communication of biotechnology; establishment of effective stakeholder net-mapping; and encouragement of scientists to speak up on biotechnology.
