FSANZ Calls for Public Submissions on GM Lucerne

October 16, 2013

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has called for submissions from industry and the public for applications to change the Food Standards Code for the countries to allow food derived from genetically modified lucerne. Lucerne is also known as alfalfa, and used as an important forage crop. FSANZ chief executive Steve McCutcheon has assessed the application from GM lucerne manufacturer Monsanto Australia, saying that growers will benefit from improved yields of forage for their grazing animals. He said "FSANZ's safety assessment has identified no public health and safety concerns for consumers," and issued the invitation for government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community to provide their input on the proposal. Closing date for submissions is on November 19, 2013.
