Bangladeshi Scientists Decode Local Jute's Genome

September 4, 2013

Scientists from Bangladesh have cracked the genome sequence of a jute variety locally known as Tosha jute (C. olitorius). This milestone is expected to further lift the fiber industry in Bangladesh as jute is the second most important crop in the country (after cotton) in terms of fiber production.

With the completion of jute's genome sequence, the scientists can now develop new jute varieties that are resistant to extreme climatic conditions as well as pests through genetic engineering. Genome sequencing may also help to improve jute's fiber length, quality, color, and strength.
